Liberty Nickels
The Liberty nickel, sometimes referred to as the V Nickel, was designed by Charles Barber and was in circulation from 183-1912. In 1883, this type appeared without the word CENTS on the coin, merely designed by Charles Barber and minted from 1883-1912. In 1883, this type fist appeared without the words CENTS on the coin, merely a large letter V. Some of these"cents-less" coins were gold plated and passed for $5 gold coins. Later that year the cents was added to distract the fraudulent practice. The key dates include the 1885, 1886, and 1912-S. five 1913 Liberty Head nickels is one of the hobby's greatest rarities with only five known specimens. These were not a regular issue and were never placed in circulation.
